Uninsuarable Conditions - FAQ
Q. If I am unable to qualify to receive
traditional
health insurance
because of an existing medical condition, what
are my health insurance options?
A. If
you apply for health coverage and you were previously
insured by a permanent insurance plan within the
last 63 days, if the insurance company denies your
application you still have the ability to qualify
for a “guaranteed issue” HIPAA
plan. Carriers are required by law to offer such
plans and usually offer one or two plan options.
If you did not have permanent health coverage within
the last 63 days you are ineligible for HIPAA coverage.
In California your only option then becomes to
apply for a guaranteed issue plan through the California
Major Risk Medical Insurance Program (MRMIP). Please
contact us for addtional information depending
on your location.
Q. How long can I remain on a HIPAA
or MRMIP plan?
A. You can remain on a HIPAA plan until
you qualify for Medicare and you can
remain on a MRMIP plan for up to 36
months. After 36 months of continuous
enrollment you will have the opportunity
to enroll into a guaranteed coverage
plan that is required to be offered
in the individual health market.
Q. Where can I get
more information on guaranteed issue
HIPAA plans?
A. You
can get more information on HIPAA plans
and coverage by going to the U.S. Department
of Labor website at: http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/health-plans/portability.htm.
You may contact us for a prompt,
accurate, and courteous reply.
